Aircraft and spacecraft, at a familiar scale

Make a large or unfamiliar dimension easier to picture. Start with the exact aircraft, vehicle or component, then keep its measurement axis visible.

Compare a wingspan and a rover

Worked scale comparison

How does a 747-8 wingspan compare with a Mars rover?

1 Boeing 747-8 full tip-to-tip wingspan is approximately 22.80 Curiosity rover vehicle lengths.

This ratio compares an aircraft wingspan with the rover vehicle length, not physical fit.

A wingspan is not one wing’s length

The 747-8 reference measures the full tip-to-tip wingspan. Dividing that value into another length creates a comparison in full wingspans; it does not give the structural length of a single wing.

The A380 entry uses overall aircraft length. That makes it a valid length comparison, but it should still be labeled as length when shown beside a wingspan.

Keep the component in the description

The Webb reference is its primary-mirror diameter. Curiosity’s reference is vehicle length without the extended arm. Ingenuity’s reference is rotor tip-to-tip span. A caption such as “one spacecraft” would lose the information that makes those measurements usable.

Create a graphic a reader can check

  1. Select the named references and choose Compare.
  2. Use metres or feet as shared outputs, then inspect each reference’s source.
  3. Download a visual PNG, source-rich SVG, or printable comparison.
  4. Keep the dimension, approximation notes and UniRuler citation with the graphic.
